We meet Kirstie Allsopp - The Handmade Fair



Last weekend we found ourselves getting up at 5am to get the train to Hampton Court Palace to go on a #kirstiesafari...

Well maybe that's not quite true! We arrived at the Etsy Marketplace to set up residency for the next few days, we were in great company sandwiched between Rose from Chamby and Cor and Anna Wiscombe.

I didn't actually take any photos of anybody else's stalls which is a massive fail on my part but do go and look at their awesome Etsy shops!

Louise from Spin City spent all weekend spinning wool from her favourite sheep Ebeneezer whilst Alice from Birds in Hats told us copious amounts of bird facts and threatened to start a twitter account for a heron she saw in the grounds. Sophie of NEONLDN's stall was beautifully bright and shiny, honestly go and look at her Etsy shop... I'll wait....

Not only was the tent full of awesome Etsy sellers but there were also a heap of talks to drop into. I did a talk on the Friday and the Saturday about setting up a successful Etsy business. I think it went well, did anybody come and listen? If so let me know what you thought!

There were talks on social media, how to set up your Etsy shop, a photography one by Lyndsey James of Photocraft and a sellers workshop where we threw difficult questions at the admins about how to be better sellers on Etsy (and therefore provide a better buying environment!)

As well as all the serious stuff there was a whole heap of ridiculous things too!

Toby from i like CATS came to visit on the Friday and we did a LUSH wrapping workshop, there was also a bunting photo competition and obviously the #WORLDPOMINATION record attempt!

We had a great weekend, lots of you bought designosaurs, we rocked our new stall layout and we drank a few alcoholic ice teas...

...OH and I nearly forgot, I SPOKE TO KIRSTIE ALLSOPP! Most exciting moment of my life. Alice Tams and I chatted away to Kirstie whilst she was having photos with other fans, before she was whisked away (she spent the whole weekend whizzing around on a golf buggy trying not to get mobbed by people like me).

ROAR! Meet our new Raptor!

A few weeks ago we released our little Velciraptor, he is our most requested dinosaur EVER so we had to bring him to life! The raptor is the most well known dinosaur as they feature in Jurassic Park. However in the films they were shown with anatomical inaccuracies, including being much larger than they were in reality and without feathers (but we all know that everybody prefers dinosaurs with scales, they're just scarier right!)

The dinosaur skeleton necklace is our signature piece and it's great to add another dinosaur to the collection!

#btnetsy Talks - Tactile Craft in a Digital World



The latest BTN Etsy Talk was part of the Brighton Digital Festival and we invited Sarah and Susannah to come down and talk about the Etsy Marketplace and community.



I arrived at 6pm to set everything up, normally Sarah (Rockcakes) does all of the set up stuff but today I was in charge. I first panicked that the cable didn't fit (but it did) and then I turned on the laptop to a message that said WINDOWS CANNOT BE RUN. Yes to any of you frowning at the fact we use windows carry on mocking us but I am pro PC and pro android, mainly because if it goes wrong I kinda know how to mash buttons until it works. This was the case this time too, restarted and BLAM we were ready to go!

We loaded up Toby - i like CATS, Ellen - B Millinery and Claire's - Yellow Bear Wares talks as people poured through the doors. The room was half full before we had even officially opened the doors!

I love the talks, they are always held at The Old Market and it's a great chance to have a drink and chat to fellow crafties, whether they are bloggers, team members, makers not on Etsy or boutique owners. It's always a good mix!

"We had heard such great things about the Brighton Etsy Team talk series, so we were super excited to attend one of their famous evening events! Needless to say, it did not disappoint! It was wonderful to meet so many interesting, driven and creative people, all gathered in one space. Some people were experienced Etsy sellers already running successful businesses through our marketplace and others were just curious to find out more. It made for a really fun, vibrant and informative meet-up. Thanks for having us and well done, Karli and Team!"


Ellen from B Millinery was the first Etsy Seller to speak about her experiences of having a an Etsy shop, creating custom orders and having a product where it is normally so vital that the buyer tries the item on.



"I make hats and accessories with a bit of a old world glamour feel. Selling hats online can be hard because people do love to try them on, as not every shape suits them so I have to try and convey whether it will suit them in my photos. I also need to convey colours and texture as many of my hats are made using really lovely fabrics.

Some milliners use polystyrene heads, this is not something I have found works for me they are not 'actual size' and it’s really hard to convey the feeling the wearer will get. Finding a model can be hard and I often have to do it myself but this is worth it I think.



After the Mentor Month and an Esty School module on shop improvement I have been trying to make sure my photos have a full length shot as well as a close up. The full length shot is good to show the customer how to wear it and the close up is food to show texture and materials used, Ho Kiou does this really well, I would not be able to tell just how lovely these items are and how much work goes in without the close up photo.



Think of your ideal customer or customers when listing items, what style do they have, what do they like, someone who does this well is Janine Basil.

Use your About page to talk about and show how you make your items, it is a fab place to answer questions and explain who you are and the processes you use.

My shop is constantly a work in progress. This is OK. It looks a lot better now, than it was three months ago, and I hope it will be even better again in three more months. I’m always learning and playing with new ideas and that’s good!"

"I used to prefer selling at markets as I loved for people to be able to see and hold my items, which I considered to be very tactile. I wasn't sure how well this translated online, however I soon realised that Etsy is simply a digital version of a market stall which needs curating and arranging just as I would set up my stall at a craft fair.

Although good photography is the most obvious (and in some ways the most important) way of conveying the physicality of your products, having a good description that really tells the story of the item will help your customer to imagine it away from the computer screen and in their actual real-life-life. The simplest way to achieve this is to always think of the Who, What, Where, Why and (as a bonus) the 'Why Buy'.



Using descriptive language really helps to bring an item to life, so make sure you have a thesaurus handy! You don't want to over embellish but throwing in some clever adjectives can open your customers imagination and help to convince them just why they should buy from your shop

These are great tips, from great sellers, even Susannah is an Etsy seller! So go forth and use them, and make sure you come to the next talk so that you can get even more hints and tips!"

Claire from Yellow Bear Wares was the last to speak but had lots to tell us...


"Selling your handmade items over the internet generally means that people won’t have touched or seen your items in real life, I wanted to share with you today a few ways that I have tried to make my items seem more real to my potential buyers, to make them feel like they know exactly what they are going to get when they purchase my jewellery.

I use cotton reels to lean my knitting needles bracelets against, and also to stand rings necklaces and earrings on. I use the cotton reel because it relates to crafts and textiles, it is instantly recognisable and most people would know the size of a cotton reel and can therefore see the size of the item they are looking at.



I use this simple and consistent technique throughout my shop, it can also help items to feel real rather than a flat digital representation.

Everything I design branding wise uses font’s and drawings etc that look hand-made or analogue, over time I have used fonts that look drawn, ink stamped, stitched, sewn and typed. You can download copyright free fonts online. Try to find something different and new. I feel that this technique adds further to conveying a hand-made aesthetic."

#btnetsy talks

Today is a big one!

I have mentioned here numerous times that I'm the Captain of the Brighton Etsy Team, we do so much with the team and the talks are a regular event which we hold at The Old Market FOR FREE!

This months talk we have the Etsy UK admins Susannah and Sarah coming down to talk to us about Tactile Craft in a Digital world as part of the Brighton Digital Festival.

As well as Etsy experts we have our own team members Toby from I Like CATS, Ellen from B Millinery and Claire from Yellow Bear Wares sharing their experiences too!

It's only a few hours away and I can't wait, although I have to set up the projector and mic this time so fingers crossed it all runs smoothly ey! I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

KINSHACHI (金鯱)

So we have a shiny new necklace! We did a sneak peek and none of you got it, but that's not very surprising as we are sure now that it has been unveiled you still don't know what it is...

Not only is this a totally awesome necklace, it's also a mythical Japanese dolphin. Could you tell? Beautiful Japanese dolphins made from mirror gold acrylic to hang from your neck.



Summer 2013, yeah last year, we went to Japan for nearly a month and stayed with our awesome amazing wonderful friend Fran in Nagoya, Japan. Whilst we were there Fran showed us the sights of Nagoya including Nagoya Castle.

The dolphins (the animal they most closely represent a sort of translation as they aren't really dolphins) are on the top of the castle and are there as tailsmen to protect it from fire. Ironically the castle was bombed in 1945 and it looks pretty on fire to me...

But don't worry everything was rebuilt, and is still being renovated now, so if you wana visit the castle and the dolphins you can.

Visual Merchandising with Jolly Brown

We now have around thirty stockists worldwide and JOLLY BROWN is one of them! When we sent our stock to Hannah we were so excited to see all of the beautiful instagram photos of designosaur products that we asked Hannah to share some of her Visual Merchandising secrets! This is one creative lady...

Describe your shop...

I opened JB in the year of the crunch and this November we have been open 7 years! Lucky number 7, the year we discovered designosaur! Lucky us! We have men, women and children from all over stopping to shop in our store for themselves or for a unique gift, there is something for everyone at JB! We pride ourselves on providing awesome customer service and amazing items making JB a special place to shop and enjoy! We have beautiful Vintage clothing and accessories, skate and streetwear, independent jewellery brands and so much more!

Which designosaur design do you personally like the most?

Its so hard to pick, which is why my orders take so long to arrive ;) I LOVE George, he truly is unique, I love that he goes with everything and looks different everyday... like me but my ultimate piece is the Humpback Whale... she's a real treasure!

Which designosaur piece do your customers love?
THE GNOMES... they received such a great response, so funny and clever, they really make people smile and that is something I hope ever Jolly Brown customer leaves with!

Do you believe visual merchandising plays and important role in selling your stock?

One hundred percent! It is key to my store and I try and be as creative as possible with all my VMing. I love the visual side of the business and I really look forward to getting new products to play with a create an installation in store... sometimes to the detriment of my ironing pile!

Have you done anything particularly creative/ different with the way you display our products?

Hell yeah! I knew I'd love it but when my first delivery arrived, I downed tools and went out to buy some props to merchandise it! It a fun and creative brand and I wanted to do it justice, I have a store of VM props already but I had to have a dinosaur somewhere in there! George was great to work with as I just put him on a different dress everyday until he sold, the whale went in my nautical area and the unicorns sold themselves really, beautiful little things they are! It was so fun to see how the different pieces worked with my store and how well they fitted in and what they added too!

Do you display products differently depending on the brand?

I do but they do also fit with the Jolly Brown vibe, I try and look how they are displayed and photographed by the brand themselves and then I work from there, that way the brand feel is still there but with a Jolly Brown slant! I use wood and brass a lot, I also love ceramic animals, they give things a personality!

What outfit would you create with your favourite designosaur piece?

I would most definitely use the whale with a classic navy and white Breton top, dungarees & a big pair of round sunnies at this time of year, she sits so beautifully on your decolletage and I love big statement pieces over t-shirts, its not something that everyone does! Dungarees are a piece of clothing which smile, they remind people of childhood, comfort and having fun; designosaur is something which always makes the corner of my mouth turn up too!!

Talking about ourselves! - Kirstie Allsopp's 'The Handmade Fair'


The Handmade Fair organised by Kirstie Allsopp is the weekend of the 19th - 21st September and we will be doing a talk as part of the Etsy Business School.

Our talk is called "Setting up a successful business. Stories from an Etsy seller"
It all sounds very serious, "business school", but they have asked us to speak so even if Etsy were going for a formal business talk that ain't gonna happen as I'm far too excitable and honest! We can't wait to tell you about how we started, all the experiences we've had along the way right up to where we are now!

If you don't want to listen to us then you can visit our stall which will be in the Etsy area of the show. We will have all of the usual dinosaurs, plus some new designs which you may not have seen before. Lucky you!

Not only can you see our ugly mugs but Deadly Knitshade will be taking on Mr X Stitch in a Mollie Makes mash up in the Super Theatre. I don't even really know what that means but it sounds amazing. Deadly Knitshade has worked with Nintendo and is famous for her graffiti knitting, so you've got to come and see her right?

It's going to be a great day out and you can get some of your Christmas shopping done early / buy lots of awesome things for yourself and be too poor to afford Christmas presents...
